If you plan simply to sell grapes to be made into wine elsewhere, anything under 10 acres would be challenging to generate a viable return, said Mr Dodson. “If you want to turn the fruit into wine and sell it, then five acres would be a good start.”

Myriad factors affect costs but, in general, vineyards cost about £12,000-£13,000 per acre to establish, Mr Dodson said, although if you plan on producing and bottling your own wine you will need to spend significantly more.
